  1. Glass and plastic are easier to clean but plastic “nooks and crannies” isn’t a critical issue. If it were then NO fountain currently made would be safe. All fountain pumps have many “nooks and crannies” impossible to reach or clean without disassembly beyond what most consumers are willing and able to do.. I’ve yet to see one which didn’t have a plastic body. Most fountains have filters that ARE plastic nooks and crannies, and none are effective at killing all bacteria and fungi.
Unless you use distilled water (not recommended), whatever is in a fountain is hard water pH>7 that gets harder through evaporation. Bacteria and fungi that thrive in a pH above 7 are killed by making the pH <7 with acid.
The way to ideally clean any fountain is to do it when recommended from day one.
    - If parts are dishwasher safe, do so if practical, otherwise clean as if not dishwasher safe.
    - Mechanically clean non-dishwasher safe parts with a soft brush or nonabrasive clean cloth and water (distilled is ideal but not necessary).
    - Fill with the same kind of water, and add 1 Tbs (15ml) white vinegar for each quart/liter capacity.
    - Run for 20 minutes.
    - Drain.
    - Rinse with clean water.
    - Refill and return to service.

  2. Our fountain was turned off for 10 days or so, because it was lacking the correct filter. I got it set up today, and our kitty has visited it 10+ times and stayed there for 30-60 seconds at a time. I can see objectively that she’s taking in a lot more water! If anyone is skeptical, don’t be! Cats love running water!

  3. Plastic is fine if you dishwash your pieces like I do. Everything is sterile up in here. Change the filter once a month, change the water once a week on top of bi-daily top offs. I do think I’ll get steel for my next fountain but if all you have is plastic, I wouldn’t rush out and replace it until you start seeing water spots or any other stains/marks that don’t go away.
